ARAVA is a generic drug commonly called leflunomide. It is a type of disease modifying anti rheumatic drug (D M A R D s), used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. ARAVA rheumatoid arthritis is helpful in reducing pain and inflammation and also in the slow progression of the above disease. ARAVA is prescribed to the adults for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. It decreases the signs and symptoms as well as the erosion and joint space that were caused due to rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that attacks the several synovial joints in a person. The immune system of a person attacks the body cells as an alien. The treatment of ARAVA includes Aspirin, Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (N S A I D s) and a steroid called Corticosteroids.
Warning for women
Women are advised not to consume ARAVA till pregnancy is excluded and they must confirm that contraception which is used by them is reliable. On the course of this drug, if a woman gets pregnant, she should consult her physician about the risk that may prevail. Not only that if a women who has the potential to bore a child and wants to discontinue ARAVA, should follow a drug elimination procedure.
Drug elimination procedure for females
Women who have the potential to bore child or wants to become pregnant or are pregnant are advised to have drug elimination procedure. This procedure involves the use of cholestyramine. 8 grams of cholestyramine should be consumed thrice in each day and this should be continued for minimum of 10 days. They must verify their plasma level below 0.02 mg/l. If they don’t use this drug elimination procedure, it may take them few years to for their metabolite to reach the normal plasma level (i.e) 0.02 mg/l.
Warning for men
Depending upon the availability of information about the use of ARAVA for men, does not show any risk of male mediated fetal toxicity. But in order to be safe male persons too are advised to consume cholestyramine, if they are planning to be a father of a child. Using the same quantity for same number of days is helpful for drug elimination. Patients suffering from immunodeficiency, infection, agranulocytosis, bone marrow dysplasia, toxic epidermal necrolysis, etc should immediately stop the consumption of ARAVA.
Side effects of consuming ARAVA
Severe side effects like loss of hair, damage to liver, stomach problem, diarrhea, skin rash, etc can be seen while consuming ARAVA for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Patients are advised to have their blood test for liver enzymes, if they are willing to consume ARAVA for arthritis treatment. Woman who are not using contraception at the time of pregnancy or child birth are advised not to consume ARAVA as it can cause several birth defects. As this drug is persistent in the body for a long time, a drug eliminating procedure should be taken. Thus ARAVA rheumatoid arthritis is helpful in decreasing the effects of arthritis but poses threat to life because of its severe side effects.
