Arthritis is a form of joint disorder that involves inflammation and pain of one or more joints. There are different types of arthritis and the common in them are Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Septic Arthritis (which is caused by joint infection), and Psoriatic Arthritis The symptoms of arthritis are felt in hands typically in fingers first, then to other parts of the body like in knees, ankles, wrists, eyes, lungs, elbows, kidneys, heart, etc. Women are more prone to have arthritis than men. Pain that causes from arthritis is due to inflammation that occurs around the joints, causing wear and tear to the joint muscles.
Symptoms of Osteoarthritis in fingers
In initial stage, one finds their finger joints to get affected first. Getting their fingers stiffed is one of the common symptoms associated with Osteoarthritis, followed by pain and inflammation. It restricts the fingers from movement by not allowing them to work properly. In this arthritis the basilar joints, experiences unbearable pain, within the thumb base, conclude to inflammation of it. The joints of finger tips are affected forming knuckles in the dorsal aspect of a joint especially in the mid finger. Nodules and lumps are also seen to have developed around the dorsal aspect of a joint. Osteoarthritis can lead to weakening of the grasping capability of a patient.
Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis in fingers
RA is known for directly affecting the middle finger joints first. And as the disease progresses, it also affects other finger joints, causing them with severe pain. It brings the fingers in a stiff position, forbidding the patients to carry out their daily activities. The paining and swelling of fingers may last for as long as six weeks. The prickling or stinging sensation and unresponsiveness in the finger may also pertain. Some complexity and deformity may also be observed like “Swan Knee” or “Boutonniere” which may cause shift of the finger or getting distorted from the thumb.
Symptoms of Psoriatic arthritis in fingers
Psoriatic arthritis generally occurs in men but are very rare. In this arthritis, joints close to the nails get damaged. The nails may show different appearance like discoloration, thickening by creating a long narrow elevation on the fingers and at last by creating a hole or cavity in the fingers.
Symptoms of Septic arthritis in fingers
Septic arthritis or Suppurative arthritis is a purulent invasion of a joint, chiefly due to bacterial infection. People having artificial joints are more risky than general people but the symptoms may vary from person to person. It is considered medical emergency as it destroys the joints in an interval of few days.
Misconception and warning
People have a false notion that crackling knuckles may cause arthritis. There is nothing to panic, as this is an old “tale” or” wives”. It can lead to weakening of grip. Obese persons are more likely to have Osteoarthritis. One should take care of their diet and must have a balanced diet and do regular exercise to avoid the different types of arthritis problem.
