Gold or Myocrisin is nothing but a type of Disease Modifying Anti Rheumatic drug (DMARDs), which is known to slow down the progression of Rheumatoid Arthritis rather than only by solving the symptoms like other DMARDs. Here gold injection doesn’t mean the metal gold, it is a compound that contains gold and it has the ability to reduce some activity of the immune system of a patient. Sodium Aurothiomalate is its scientific name. Sometimes these gold injections are prescribed because gold has the property to decrease some sort of inflammation in the joints and it also helps in reducing pain and stiffness.
Gold injections are provided to the patients suffering from severe that is (Type 2) Rheumatoid arthritis and on whom other medications are not working. It doesn’t work as a pain killer but reduces pain by decreasing the inflammation that occurs due to Rheumatoid Arthritis. Dosage of 1 gram is usually given once every week until some improvement is seen. Generally this gold injection is given in the deep muscles and buttock is usually preferred by the doctors. If these injections seem to work on a patient, a doctor may decrease the dosage to monthly. This drug doesn’t have a reputation of working on all severe Rheumatoid Arthritis patients. If a patient seems to have improved in condition, then he or she may have the full chance of curing the disease.
There are several side effects of using these gold injections by a Rheumatoid arthritis patient. Some side effects may include sore throat, bleeding, mouth ulcers, fever, pupura, epistaxis, diarrhea, anemia, liver and stomach problem, etc. These side effects may be sometimes prove to be fatal for the patient suffering from this disease.
Some precaution is required
If a patient is highly allergic to some heavy metals like gold, he or she is readily advised not to go for this treatment. The dormant ingredients that may be present in this drug could be the cause of allergy or other reaction. Patients who have some sort of problem regarding kidneys, lungs, stomach, liver, heart, high blood pressure, depression, etc are not advised to go through this medication, as it may prove fatal to them. Using this medication a patient may find him more sensitive to the exposure of sun. It is advised to use some sunscreen lotions before getting exposed to sunlight.
Precaution during pregnancy
First of all it is not advised to use this medication during pregnancy and if the need, is utmost it should be done under strict supervision of a doctor. If a patient is pregnant or expecting to be pregnant, this medication will reach her breast milk, and may cause some serious side effects or may prove to be fatal to the nursing infant as well as to the nursing mother. So it is readily advised to the nursing mothers to consult a doctor before breast feeding.
Gold injections can treat Rheumatoid Arthritis but it has diverse side effects which sometimes challenges the mortality of a patient.
