Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a systematic inflammatory disorder, which primarily affects the joints and many a times the tissues and the organs, leading to deformity of our body. Rheumatoid Arthritis traps not only young men and women in the age group from 10 to 60. It is an autoimmune disease; where a patient’s immune system attacks his/her own body cells leading it to a sort of deformity.
Causes of Rheumatoid Arthritis
A simple definition of this disease would be a systemic inflammatory disorder, which primarily affects the Synovial joints, leading to inflammation, stiffness, and severe pain in joints like knees, hip, etc. Resultant or Pathogenesis effects of this disease may vary. The causes that conclude may be still in-convincing and incomplete in many a ways. Patients still believes in their destiny and pursue for a curative conclusion. Researchers go through much intricate research that leads them to many diverse results for the root cause.
Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis
The symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis can be observed in joints, skin, lungs, kidneys, heart, and blood vessels and in other parts as well. There is certainly unbearable pain in joints like hands, fingers, wrists, feet, elbows, ankles and knees followed by swelling and stiffness. The most sufferable parts of the joints are the fingers; where there are most joints involved leading to deformities such as ulnar deviation, swan neck deformity, Boutonniere deformity, and Z-thumb. In this disease, there is a common symptom of morning stiffness, which may last for more than one-hour. Patients suffering from RA may find inflammation of blood vessel, which can be a reason of formation of nodules, or lumps, under their skin
Types of Rheumatoid Arthritis
GENETICAL FACTORS (HEREDITARY): Some genetic factors like Protein Tyrosine Phosphate, Non Receptor type-22 gene that has been identified as a contributory factor with Auto-Immune disorders.
TUMOUR NECROSIS FACTORS, TNF (ALPHA): It’s a small cell protein molecule used for sending signals, can be treated as proteins or glycoproteins that falls under cytokines group, which may be a solid factor for the cause of cell death.
ENVIORNMENTAL FACTORS: Lifestyle of different natures such as smoking, having drugs, especially consumption of tobacco can have some effect. Careless lifestyle, and obesity is one of the main factors that lead to RA. Pollution of different types, such as working in hazardous condition like silica dust, coal mines, may be another cause of disability of musculoskeletal system disorder, which may trigger this disease.
Treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis
- For the treatment of RA, generally three types of drugs are used by the doctors. They are non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), corticosteroids, and disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs).
- There are some DMARDs which are currently available in the local market like, Sulfaslazines (azulfidine), Leflunomide (arava), Rituximab (rituxan), Methotrexale (rheumatrex), etc.
- Some tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blockers like Adalimumab (humira), Etanercept (enbrel), are some medicines that reduce pain, inflammation, and stiffness in the joints. But having these medicines may cause some side effects like infection in the affected area and some types of cancers.
Though now we know the cause, effect and treatment of RA, but as it is incurable in nature, it is advisable to do some physical exercise, therapies and maintain a good balanced diet. These basic things will help a patient to recover soon and to live a long, pain free life.
