Minocycline is a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic, generally it is considered to be the safest disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs). Though these drugs too, have some effects if used in a span of 2 to 3 months like dizziness, problem to stomach, discoloration of finger nails, and pigmentation and rashes to the skin, especially if exposed to sun or some U V radiations. It can also cause some damage to large organ like liver, but in some rare cases.
Minocycline is tested to have effective to nearly 60 percent of the patient suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). This DMARD is comparatively weak to that of methotrexate (alve), leflunomide (arava), or those of biologics like humira, remicade, enbrel, rituxan, orencia, etc. These drugs do not have the properties like antibiotics but are more effective on the immune system and it has the ability to forbid or prohibit enzymes that are helpful to break down cartilage and some of the connective tissues. This property of minocycline and other drugs of this family are found to be very effective.
Minocycline and tetracyclines were primarily manufactured as medicines for their antibiotic property but recently researched that, these DMARDs have some anti-inflammatory property that make them useful for the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Patients consuming these drugs showed some signs of improvement in different laboratory tests like blood tests for erythrocyte sedimentation rate, rheumatoid factor (RF) level, hematocrit, etc. Minocycline has some several effects that show its usefulness in Rheumatoid Arthritis. Some research done, shows that minocycline and tetracyclines has not only antibiotic property but also achived to block some ill actions of some enzymes called metalloproteinases. These enzymes play a vital role in the destruction of several bones and cartilages in the joints of patients suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Side effects – Some side effects like discoloration of skin, gums, and teeth may be seen. Its occasional use may result in some auto immune disorder like lupus (chronic skin condition), and hepatitis. Some drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms may also occur during the intercourse of this antibody minocycline. Women consuming this antibody may be more prone to vestibular side effects as compared to men. Some allergies like rash, swelling, itching, etc are also seen and if used for a prolonged period, it may result in thyroid cancer.
Precautions -Though minocycline is mostly advised than other NSAIDs and DMARDs, as because it helps in forbidding the further erosion and damage to the bones, cartilages, etc, but before using them, a patient has to take some precautions. It is readily advised not to consume minocycline antibody during following conditions:
- If a patient is under a prescription of some medicines, strict diet, or having any herbal treatment.
- If a patient is pregnant, of if she is a lactating mother.
- If a patient have some allergy while consuming some medicine and food.
- If a patient have some breathing problem, kidney, liver problem, or have lupus.
A patient must consult their doctor before intake of this antibody as it may interact with other medicines causing some ill effects.
