RA may vary from person to person, depending upon, age, sex, and weight. It almost doubles the risk of heart attack, within a very few years of getting RA diagnosed. But with the help of medication and following a heart-healthy lifestyle, can help to protect the heart.
Higher chances of Heart disease with RA
Scientists of different countries after researching have come to a conclusion that patients suffering from RA are more prone to Cardio Vascular Disease (CVD), which slowly but surely drags a patient towards death. The reason in the death certificate may show death due to (CVD) or some other causes, but the actual reason is RA, may not be revealed. Though the real cause may not be proved but we are well familiar with the consequences.
What is Atherosclerosis?
It is an inflammatory immune disorder, also known for hardening the arteries. It happens to form tiny Plaques (a small disk- shaped formation or growth; a patch) inside the arteries. There are uncountable arteries that go to the heart. In this disease, Plaques are building up in the path of the arteries, forbidding the flow of the blood through these arteries. This disease is called (CAD) or Coronary Artery Disease, which increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death due to certain cardiac failure.
Link between RA and Heart Disease
There is a big connection between Ra and heart disease. People who are suffering from RA have a great risk of heart disease as compared to general population. Patient of this disease are more likely to have heart attack, hospitalization and five times more would have unrecognized heart attack and cardiac death too. After diagnosis they may not have a chest pain, due to pain relieving pills used basically to treat their arthritis.
Causes and Symptoms of Heart disease due to RA
The exact cause is not yet proved by the scientists. They linger to the traditional factors such as Obesity, Increased Cholesterol, and high blood pressure. But these factors were not enough to explain the increased number of cardiac events that were seen in their studies. They believe RA, to be one of the causes associated with different types of heart diseases. The symptoms of heart attack may vary as some heart attacks are intense and sudden, where no one is sure but most attacks starts with a mild pain and discomfort. There are other symptoms like shortening of breath, breaking out in cold sweat, lightheadedness or experiencing nausea.
A RA patient can decrease the risk of heart disease
A patient suffering from RA, should also be screened and treated for heart risk factors including high cholesterol. As it is common in a patient of RA to have the traditional risk factors for heart disease and must be provided with better medication. Other than medication, there are several steps to reduce the risk of heart disease. Some steps that can a patient acquire are as follows: Controlling blood pressure and Cholesterol, Regular exercise to keep weight under control, getting regular medical checkups, eating a healthy diet and last of all quitting smoking.
