Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the body attacking and destroying the joint cartilages. This results in joint pain stiffness and swelling. It is not age sensitive and anybody can get it including small children and adolescent. It is also not specific of the race it affects or the geographical location of a person and neither is it contagious. Therefore it is good to understand what the causes of this deadly disease are. By understanding what causes rheumatoid arthritis, it will be easier to reduce panic in people with infected patients.
Although scientists have not yet come up with a steady explanation on what causes rheumatoid arthritis, there are a number of factors that they believe could try to explain the phenomena of this auto- immune disease. Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by a genetic gene, a unique gene that is responsible of causing this deadly, auto immune disease. When this gene attacks your body, in trial to protect you, the body will in return will produce an immune system to protect it from the gene, unfortunately this ends in the body fighting against itself and the result is rheumatoid arthritis.
Most scientists who support the theory that rheumatoid arthritis is caused by genes, argue that the disease is genetically inherited. The genes that are responsible of causing rheumatoid arthritis, affects the body’s immune system and weaken it. These genes are passed along a generation in a family and therefore this theory makes sense. However, research done also shows that not all individuals with the genes causing rheumatoid arthritis are affected by the disease. If an individual has a highly healthy body, the disease is unlikely to affect them. Also the number of these genes present in an individual’s also determine whether they will be affected by the disease and also determines how severe the disease will be, therefore if the genes are many, a person stands a chance of suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and also it might be very severe.
There are still other health scientists who believe that rheumatoid arthritis is caused by certain environmental factors. They believe that for the disease to get active there must be something that triggers the genes into action. They argue that it there might some bacteria or viruses that are associated in causing the disease. However, this does not make rheumatoid arthritis contagious and only people with the genes causing it are susceptible of being affected.
The other theory argues that rheumatoid arthritis is caused by human body hormones. They support the theory in certain true facts and this makes the theory look logic. For instance, of all the affected individuals the greater percentage belongs to women. During pregnancy, rheumatoid arthritis tends to be noticeable in women with genes causing the disease, during breastfeeding, the disease may become severe. The other statement that supports this theory is that when using contraceptives, the disease become more visible. These facts show that rheumatoid arthritis is caused by hormonal changes and these hormones can also trigger it in to action.
