Rheumatoid arthritis vegan diet is a diet that includes strict vegetarian food and its supplement to improve the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (R A). A gluten free vegan diet is full of fresh fruits, green vegetables, nuts, etc. This sort of diet is consumed by the patients who have risk of rheumatoid arthritis, heart attack and stroke. A study was done on thirty eight patients having rheumatoid arthritis. They were asked to consume vegan diet full of vegetables and fruits excluding the dairy products like cheese, butter, fatty milk, etc for at least one year. They seem to have improvement in their ailment. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the body cells of a person leading them to some sort of pain, inflammation, and deformity to the synovial joints like that of hand, legs, shoulder, etc. if the disease progresses it further affects the tissues and the organs like lungs, heart, stomach, kidney, etc. Its diagnosis and treatment becomes mandatory but use of several drugs like N S A I D s and D M A R D s cause significant side effects. The side effects may be bleeding of peptic ulcers, cancer, rash, and damage of bone marrow.
Rheumatoid arthritis vegan diet is devoid of all animal products like meat, poultry, eggs, whole dairy product that contains a type of acid called arachidonic acid which is helpful in increasing the inflammation in the patient’s body. On the other hand consuming vegetarian diet may have an anti inflammatory effect as it contains less arachidonic acid. These plant diets have essential enzymes and fatty acids that help in rheumatoid arthritis. There may be some allergy due to intake of this vegan diet but it is confined to few patients. Vegan diet falls in the category of natural treatment for rheumatoid arthritis patient. Some other natural treatment includes black currant seed oil, zinc, fish oils, borage oil, etc for the people suffering with rheumatoid arthritis.
Vegan diets have low saturated fats content in them. They are full of monounsaturated fats that are helpful in lowering the cholesterol level and weight of a patient. Though the study of the use of vegan diet does not show any improvement in heart disease or in some events of heart disease but some more research has to be done in future in order to know the elements present in vegan diet that has better benefits to rheumatoid arthritis patients. Thus the study done on thirty eight people suffering from this disease shows that rheumatoid arthritis vegan diet is cutting out of animal products like meat, eggs, cheese, oats, rye, barley, whole dairy product, and other supplements that contain protein gluten as an ingredient. One should be very careful while consuming this vegan diet. They should consult their doctor before hand and be sure that their diet must contain enough protein, iron, calcium, vitamins and minerals. In order to maintain the balance they should include soy milk, tofu, nuts, etc.
