Vitamin D and rheumatoid arthritis have close connection in them. Sources of Vitamin D
Sunlight is the prominent and vast source of vitamin d for most people. People having rheumatoid arthritis should expose themselves to sunlight as the skin converts the ultraviolet B radiation of the sun to vitamin D. Use of sunscreen lotion, which has the presence of S P F, restricts the skin to form vitamin D. Some other sources of vitamin D are cod liver oil, shark oil, milk, green vegetables, etc. So people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis are advised to consume more vitamin D to repair their joints from getting damaged. Vitamin D also helps from some disease like rickets, kwashiorkor, etc.
Vitamin D and rheumatoid arthritis are co related with each other. Deficiency of vitamin D can cause several autoimmune diseases. Autoimmune is a disorder where the immune system of a person attacks the body cells and tissues and ultimately damages them. Thus several autoimmune diseases like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis can be caused due to deficiency of vitamin D. In some studies it was proved that women consuming more amount of vitamin D after their menopause showed less deterioration of their joints as compared to other women of the same class. While on other research it was proved that Vitamin D has nothing to do with patients of rheumatoid arthritis. Vitamin D inhibits in the affected joints which are well known to cause pain and inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis.
Calcium combined with vitamin D also plays an important role in decreasing the erosion of the affected bones due to rheumatoid arthritis. Patients who have low levels of Vitamin D due to rheumatoid arthritis are more prone to have higher risk of bone fractures. Normal intake of vitamin D for a healthy person should be between 400 to 600 IU and people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis should be provided with minimum of 1000 IU of vitamin D daily. Patients having this chronic disease are advised to consult their rheumatologist before consuming the amount of vitamin D. From the above discussion we can come to a conclusion that vitamin D is very important in the betterment of the tender joints like hand, leg, elbow, etc. As some studies show Vitamin D and rheumatoid arthritis has some contradictory results, it is advised to the patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis to discuss the matter with their doctor before consuming vitamin D.
